Taking a stroll back in time- Sponge cake time!


Wednesday presents us with many wonderful options.We can look at how marvelous the first half of our week has been or look forward to the weekend. That is ever so close. Hump day is my favorite day. It’s full of such endless possibilities. 

Today I have decided to take on a little sponge cake challenge with my beloved Kitchenaid. This recipe was sent to me and claims to be from the 1887 Whitehouse Cookbook. 


Plain Sponge Cake


  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups of fine powdered sugar
  • 2 cup of sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoonfuls of baking powder


Beat the yolks of the eggs together with fine powdered sugar. Stir in gradually one cup of sifted flour and the whites of the eggs beaten to a stiff froth, then a cup of sifted flour in which baking powder have been stirred, and, lastly, a scant teacupful of boiling water, stirred in a little at a time. Flavor, add salt and, however thin the mixture may seem, do not add any more flour. Bake in shallow tins.
